There is a long list of the books I read this winter but I’m here with my top 5, for you. Regan from booktube did a video about her top five books that she read this winter which motivated me to do my own version of it.
So here is a list of the top 5 books I read in the month of November & December 2016 and January & February 2017.
In no particular order…
(Except the last one. That’s my favorite.)
The Assassin’s Blade – Sarah J Maas
I have read and loved all the books in the throne of glass series except Empire of Storms and there is a reason for that. Ah, I read The Assassin’s blade after Queen of Shadows and the ship in that book really wasn’t working for me. I did row through it because of the story but after having read The Assasin’s Blade and having my heart shattered into a million pieces (even though we all saw it coming), I could not continue with the other ship’heavy romance in the beginning of EOS. So, beware of that.
I’d suggest you read it before HOF if you haven’t started with the series yet. It’ll save you a possible slump.
Celaena Sardothian, Arobynn Hamel’s apprentice, is a part of the assassin’s guild in Rifthold along with Sam Cortland in this book.
We follow Celaena through her journey on five missions in this action packed compilation of novellas. From the pirate bay to dry deserts, Celaena actively acts against Arobynn’s orders and risks an unimaginable punishment.
But is a small act of kindness worth a lifetime of torture and misery?
Read TAB to find out.
My Favorite Quotes
There was no way in hell she was going to move to the southern continent without all of her books.
If you can learn to endure pain, you can survive anything. Some people learn to embrace it- to love it. Some endure it through drowning it in sorrow, or by making themselves forget. Others turn it into anger.
Quiet as mice, quiet as the wind, quiet as the grave.
The music broke her apart and put her back together, only to rend her asunder again and again.
Cress – Marissa Meyer
There are so many reasons as to why this is my favorite one out of all the books in the tetralogy. Truly, all the book in the main Lunar Chronicles tertalogy are good enough to be included in a list like this but I only get to to pick one for the sake of diversity.
The story that was building up from the last two books is finally getting somewhere. It is not the fairy tale ending yet but it gives us hope for one. Cinder and Kai have amazing understanding, even though they’re thousands of miles apart and Scarlet and Wolf are… doing their own thing.
Thorne is my favorite character from the series and we see his character gain some depth. We also get to see him be selfless for once and possibly fall in love with the handiest and most adorable female of the crew. What’s better? She’s an ultimate fangirl so we can relate on a whole new level.
Good job, Marissa Meyer.
My Favorite Quotes
I promise I will not let you die without being kissed.
“Have you given any thought to your wedding vows?” Kai snorted.
“Delete anything that has to do with love, respect, or joy, and I’ll sign on the dotted line.”
Maybe there isn’t such a thing as fate. Maybe it’s just the opportunities we’re given, and what we do with them. I’m beginning to think that maybe great, epic romances don’t just happen. We have to make them ourselves.
You can help me pick out a tiara when we’re done saving the world.
Fairest – Marissa Meyer
I know that I said that I would not include another book from the lunar chronicles tetralogy but this is actually a novella. I had never read anything from a negative character’s point of view and Marrissa Meyer very artfully takes the reader on a journey into Queen Lavana’s mindset. Why is she so evil? What triggered her obsession and hunger for power?
Fairest, a bridge between Cress (Book #3) and Winter (Book #4), is told from Queen Lavana’s POV. What was she like before she became the Lunar queen? What have been her motivations? She said she had married for love, once. What was he like?
Marissa Meyer spins yet another unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death.
My Favorite Quotes
Love is a conquest! Love is war!
“Maybe the princess could save herself.”
“That sounds like a pretty good story too.”
Levana knew a great deal about beauty, just as she knew a great deal about ugliness.
Then, between the heartbreak and the loneliness, there was love. So open and intense it stole Levana’s breath away.
Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen
Elizabeth Klett has done a marvelous job with the audiobook and her version is available to listen to, for free, on Librivox.
I have read the book and I have watched the movie and I can write with utmost confidence that if I had one historical fiction era to live in, I would pick this one.
Arguably the best classic novel out of the ones that I have read so far and definitely the most satisfying of love stories.
Both Miss Bennet and Mr. Darcy are proud and vain to an extent and their combined prejudices about each other and the rest of the world makes Pride and Prejudice the most aptly titled book that I’ve had the pleasure of reading in a long time.
Jane Austen, with her ability to take you centuries back in time, her witty humor and her ability to make you feel an emotional turmoil with the subtlest of adjectives makes this story a must have literary experience.
When Mr. Bingley and his friend Mr. Darcy, two handsome and rich bachelors, arrive into a small town… every unmarried woman in town seek to get the men to notice them. Mr. Bingley finds himself taken with the beautiful Jane, eldest of the Bennet sisters and Mr. Darcy ignites a feud with the second to the eldest sister, Elizabeth.ith her
With her beautiful eyes and strong wit, Elizabeth soon converts Mr. Darcy’s initial feelings towards her into love but nothing he could do would ever convince her to marry him.
Since she could forgive his price had he not mortified hers.
Jane’s behavior around Bingley leads to a series of misunderstandings and broken promises and a happy ending doesn’t seem likely for any of the sisters.
Could Elizabeth turn matters around for the sake of her sister’s happiness or are they both destined to find love somewhere else?
The main character’s wit and dry humor resonates with the author’s and so does Mr. Darcy’s. The most satisfying tale of love ever penned by Miss Jane Austen doesn’t disappoint.
My Favorite Quotes
There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me.
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine.
We are all fools in love.
Illuminae -Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Out of all the books listed in this post, this one is unarguably my favorite. Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff have penned this masterpiece entirely in the format of notes, conversations, and memoirs.
After 10-15 pages or so, you get a hang of it and find it to be unlike any other book you ever came across.
A surprisingly quick read with a heart-wrenching plot twist. Must read.
Illuminae is set in the year 2575. Two mega-corporations are at war over a planet and the people who live illegally on it, get caught up in the crossfire. Two teenager’s, Ezra and Kady, having broken up that morning, thought that the worst part of the day was over. That all changed when they have to team up in order to flee the planet on the evacuating fleet. One thing leads to another and they get separated and this results in Kady being on board the Hypatia and Ezra on the Alexander.
Thousands of people escape but are now being hunted down by a ship for total obliteration. While this is going on, a virus breaks lose on ship #3, the Copernicus and the defense mechanism of Alexander, an AI named ADIEN, goes rogue in order to eliminate the threat.
Since nobody will inform Kady about what’s going on, she decides to hack into the ship’s data in order to learn the truth and seeks Ezra’s help in doing so. Which was awkward. She soon discovers that there is a lot more going on that the organization lead on. With an attack ship gaining in on them, will they be able to figure things out in time?
Illuminae is a unique and original novel about a grand space adventure that is sure to blow your mind when it’s done with you.
My Favorite Quotes
Am I not merciful?
Perhaps bravery is simply the face humanity wraps around its collective madness.
He presses the triggers. And like roses in his hands, death blooms.
All he cares about here on the edge of forever, is her. He does not want to die. Not because he is afraid. Simply because he cannot bear the thought of leaving her behind.
