Top 15 TV Shows of 2016

Please note that the shows listed in this post did not necessarily premiere in 2016 for the first time. I just started watching them this year. I did not include shows that I started before 1st January 2016. Enjoy!

#15 Blindspot

There are some mysteries that attract your attention. Fewer that manage to keep it. Combine that with a stellar cast and fast paced storyline and you’ve got yourself an entertaining thriller that you can’t help but come back to every single week.

‘Jane Doe’ wakes up in the middle of times square, naked inside a bag with a complete loss of memory. Every inch of her body is covered in tattoos but what does it all mean? Who is she and who did this to her?

#14 Younger

Finding a job in publishing is tough in NYC. Finding a job when you’re 40 and practically inexperienced is impossible. Liza is a 40-year old single mother. Having sent her kid off to India for college, she decides to pose as a 26-year old in order to get a job. But how far is she willing to go to keep it?

Sutton Foster is the star of this show. She makes it believable. Watching the show, you can tell the difference in little gestures that she makes when she’s playing a 26-year old vs. when she’s playing a 40-year old. There is just the right amount of humor, romance, and drama in this show.

And it’s relevant.

#13 The Expanse

Google did a good job explaining this one: Hundreds of years in the future, things are different than what we are used to after humans have colonized the solar system and Mars has become an independent military power. Rising tensions between Earth and Mars have put them on the brink of war. Against this backdrop, a hardened detective and a rogue ship’s captain come together to investigate the case of a missing young woman. The investigation leads them on a race across the solar system that could expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.

This show has all the elements that one would desire from a science fiction drama. It can all be a little confusing at first but don’t lose hope.

#12 Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones, one of the darker Marvel characters, is done being a superhero. In order to fend for herself, she now works as a private investigator. She has learned to care only for herself in order to move on so when a ghost from the past comes knocking at her door, her instincts tell her to run as fast as she can. But will she?

Jessica Jones, with her limited use of powers… Is still a bad ass. It’s dark, it’s gloomy, it’s perfect.

#11 Preacher

A Preacher possessed by a supernatural entity embarks on a journey to literally find God. To meet him and ask him the one question that mankind has struggled with time and again. Why did he make us?

Sounds alright. Not all that exciting. Right?

Well, let me pump it up a bit. With the supernatural entity that possesses the Preacher, he has the power to make you do anything he says. Literally, anything he says. Sometimes too literally. His posse is made up of a bloodthirsty ex-girlfriend and a vampire. On top of everything, the Preacher is hella hot.

#10 Jane The Virgin

Jane is a religious girl. Her grandmother told her at a very young and impressionable age that she needed to save herself, until after marriage, for her husband. At 23, she has respected her grandmother’s wishes thus far. Which is why it’s a surprise when they discover her pregnancy. Turns out she was artificially inseminated by accident and the supermarket belonged to her boss who was also her teenage crush.

This show manages to keep me smiling and giggling while also managing to make me cry and pull at my hair sometimes. Side n0te: I do not have a ship.

#9 Shameless

*files nails as Google does the intro* Oscar-nominated actor William H. Macy stars as Frank Gallagher, a single father of six who spends much of his free time drinking at bars. The Gallagher children — led by oldest daughter Fiona (Emmy Rossum), who takes on much of the child-rearing responsibility due to her mother’s absence — manage to raise themselves in spite of Frank’s lack of parenting and unusual parenting style when he does choose to act like a father. The drama is an adaptation of the BAFTA Award-winning British show of the same name.

Brilliant, honest, authentic, unapologetic, unconventional and fresh. Doesn’t shy away from exploring any part of the poor American lifestyle. Be it drugs, abuse, neglect, teenage sex or alcoholism.

#4 Orphan Black

Sarah has a troubled past as an English orphan who bounced around foster homes before being taken in by Mrs. S, who uprooted her and her foster brother, Felix, to North America. She has made bad decisions in her life but always strives to do right by her daughter, Kira.

When Sarah witnesses the suicide of a woman, Beth (who looks like her) she decides to steal Beth’s identity (boyfriend and money included) in an attempt to begin a new life for herself and Kira, with whom Sarah hopes to reunite. But assuming Beth’s life doesn’t go as smoothly as she anticipates because Beth was a cop caught in the middle of a deadly conspiracy, making Sarah the new target. Sarah must fight to stay alive while trying to escape from the complex web. As more threads appear, Sarah is pulled deeper, and Felix becomes her one true confidant.

One word. Clones. Excited yet?

Now, all the clones have different identities and personalities and they’re are all played brilliantly by Tatiana Maslany. One is a German, other is a soccer mom while another one is a psycho killer. Her performance is the best part of the show. Rightfully recognized at multiple award ceremonies, too. Orphan black is filled with suspense, thrill, and drama.

#3 Westworld

Imagine a theme park filled with life-like robots that follow a set script that the guests could do whatever they pleased with. Westworld is a sci-fi drama set in an Old West theme park where guests interact with automatons in scenarios that are developed, overseen and scripted by the park’s creative, security and quality assurance departments.

Based on the 1973 feature film directorial debut by Michael Crichton, Westworld dares to propose the answer to an age-old question. What makes us human?

Where does consciousness come from? How shall it arise in robots?

I know for certain that I’m hooked, although it took a while to truly sink into it and a lot of conversation even after the end to fully appreciate it.

#2 Outlander

Imagine waking up in eighteenth century Scotland and bag a hot Scottish hunk in replacement of your old husband. Not the worst, eh?

No (for a while, at least).  Claire Randall and her husband Frank were on their second honeymoon after a five-year separation (due to both of their service in the second world war) when she was thrown two hundred years back in time. Few years before the Jacobite rebellion.

Watch as she uses her brain and skills to try and get back to her own time. Back to her life and her husband.

Catorina Balfe is perfect as Claire. Her face is extremely expressive and you feel everything she’s feeling. She can express joy or make your cry just by a shift of an eyebrow. Brilliant performances by all the actors on the show. All that combined with beautiful shots of the Scottish Highlands. And oh, the accents. What more could anybody ask for?

Based on a series of books by Diana Gabaldon.

#1 Stranger Things

This thrilling Netflix-original drama stars award-winning actress Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, who lives in a small Indiana town in 1983 — inspired by a time when tales of science fiction captivated audiences. When Joyce’s 12-year-old son, Will, goes missing, she launches a terrifying investigation into his disappearance with local authorities. As they search for answers, they unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries involving secret government experiments, unnerving supernatural forces, and a very unusual little girl.

If you didn’t hear anything about this eight-episode series, you have been living under a rock.

The child actors are the highlight of the show. Once you start watching, you can’t stop. Even if you stop to do other things, you’ll be thinking about this show. It will own your life for the next few days/weeks/months.

I want season two ASAP!
